It’s not always going to be a “bright, bright sun-shiny” day as a real estate agent. In fact, lightning might have even struck the very house you were planning on showing today. (After you texted your clients to tell them you’d be running late, of course.) And you might have even forgot the code to the lock box. Plus, your dog escaped the house today and your kids are calling you frantically as they roam the neighborhood. The clouds look like a nightmare too… hail damage is not a far cry from reality if you have to drive around in weather all day. Long story short… any given day could end up going terribly wrong in real estate.

A Positive Attitude Can Act as Damage Control
Guess what… even if all these things happen to you, you can recover! (Hint: with a positive attitude, that is!). Even if everything goes wrong, having an upbeat and “glass half full” outlook can help as damage control, whereas a negative attitude can start a downward spiral into you questioning why you got into real estate in the first place. With that perspective, you are literally closing the doors to your future listings, your future clients, and your opportunities, because you simply aren’t looking for them anymore. You’re stuck in the feelings of failure, instead of learning the lessons and recovering from failure.
Positivity Creates Opportunity
Our brains change when we’re “in the positive.” When we worry, we are living in the future. When we stress about regret, we are living in the past. But, when we’re positive and enjoying the moment, we’re living in the present. And, if you can get there with me right now… just open your mind slightly to this… there is always something positive about in the moment. You just have to have (that’s right!) a positive attitude. Play an “eye spy with my little eye” game with yourself next time you have some less than great moments.
For example, if a client’s negotiations fall through, remember that it’s a chance to dodge something and start anew (perhaps something even better is right around the corner!). Maybe that house only seemed perfect… but in a day or so, they actually find that perfect home. It was meant to be, and just required a positive attitude. Just think about if you let a negative attitude rule the day. You might have ripped the sellers’ agent to shreds and pushed through a less than quality contract just to make it happen, thereby ruining a relationship with a fellow real estate agent and getting your clients into a less than great deal.
When We’re Positive as Real Estate Agents, We Create More Connections
Anyone had this experience? You walk into a store or restaurant and no one makes eye contact. Smiles? Non-existent. You want to run out from where you came from and find somewhere else to shop or eat, right? Same with us real estate agents. If our clients see us with a scowl, talking badly about other agents, or finding something wrong with everything, they might want to run and hide (or run right to another real estate agent’s arms!). Same goes with our networking. If we’re always complaining, why would any brokers, title companies, or contractors want to work with us? Let alone grab coffee… We’re annoyingly negative (all the time!). Positivity on the other hand, creates connections. Often in places you might expect it least. And, connections are some of the most important ways to maintain our real estate business. The more quality connections, the more opportunities, the more problems we can solve collectively, the more people we know… and the more leads we get. Next time you find yourself dwelling on the negative, try to remember this article and “flip that switch”!
Real Estate Coaching with Lana Structure of REStructure NOW
I found myself a real estate agent seeking a coach myself and not finding exactly what I was looking for online or in my network. I wanted a real estate coach who was down-to-earth and had real world knowledge on how to navigate sales, structure, consistency, and lead generation so that I wasn’t always a hamster on the wheel, but rather had time and space to thrive in life and business. So, I created my own program: REStructure NOW. With structure, anything is possible in real estate. It means making time for outreach, for marketing, for creativity, and yes, for fun too.
By being positive in life and work, you can also create a successful real estate business. If you’d like one-on-one coaching support, access to my online video library of courses, or in-person group educational classes, click here to connect.
